Cisco VPN Client and Vista
by admin on Nov.22, 2006, under Networking, Systems, VPN, Vista
I run Cisco VPN for my companies VPN solution and to connect to that VPN we use a Cisco VPN client. With Vista’s new and improved security features the current client no longer works. I have downloaded the new Cisco VPN beta client for Vista but we have been unable to get it to work currently.
As we try things and find out more information on this issue I will update this post. Being we are in testing yet for Vista we have not spent much time or energy on the issue. If anyone has a workaround for this already please reply to this post. Anyone running Cisco VPN and thinking of upgrading please beware.
*Update*
Had another user try that Beta client 4.8.01.0590 and they were able to connect just fine. Looks like the other user maybe has a config issue.

More Vista Fun with VPN » Super-Networking Blog » Blog Archive
March 12th, 2007 on 1:54 pm[...] I originally posted on running Cisco VPN on Vista here. There is actually a newer client that is working better and its version # is 4.8.02.0010. You must install the msi version because the is version doesn’t install on Vista. We have fun this to be a stable VPN client on both Vista and XP for most connections. [...]

Is this a new install or did you just upgrade to Windows Vista? Have you had problems in the past with Windows XP?

It is a brand new laptop with a Vista 32bit install. I have no issues and had no issues on XP. I tried a few of the steps mentioned on here like change my wireless connection to allow others to connect through this connection. It appeaers to reach the VPN server for authentication and just wont authenticate me. Drat.

So you are getting to the point where it prompts you for a login and then it just hangs or does it deny you? Are you running it against a radius server?

Some Vista Troubleshooting info from Cisco
Workarounds for Vista:
Error 412: The remote peer is no longer responding
Upgrade local NAT device’s firmware
If this is not possible, switch to TCP
If this is not possible, use the following keyword in connection profile (*.pcf):UseLegacyIKEPort=1
CAVEAT: If you are using Domain Isolation customer will not be able to use the UseLegacyIKEPort
keyword as this conflicts with Microsoft’s domain isolation.
Error 442: Failed to enable virtual adapter
Open Network and Sharing Center
Open Network Connection Manager
Enable the virtual adapter (“Cisco VPN Adapter”)
Right-click on it and select “Diagnose”
Select “Fix…”
If this doesn’t work
Run the following from ‘cmd’:
reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters /v ArpRetryCount /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
Reboot
NOTE: If customer has UAC enabled, s/he must run ‘cmd’ as administrator.
Error 1721 (At install time.)
Client does not support 64bit.

Also try downloading the latest stable version:
5.0.00.0340-k9

It does deny me. Once I enter in my logon credentials I can see it connects to the IP address of the VPN connection and secures the communication and then the log on window prompts me again. If I do that same thing again I get the failed to authenticate user window. Not sure but I dont think that we are going against a radius server, I will check.

Yeah if you are going against a radius box they should be able to troubleshoot the logs. Even if it is a local user on the concentrator they should be able to look through the logs.
Otherwise try upgrading client and the normal stuff like turn off Vista firewall or any other firewall on your machine. Bypass any wi-fi routers or other home router and plug right into your cable modem/dsl and see if that works.

Do you know where I get the 5.0.00.0340-k9 version?

Someone with a Cisco login should be able to download the software from http://www.cisco.com\tac
Wherever you got the old one you should be able to get the new one.

Chris,I just wanted to let you know that I got the VPN working. I used the .034 version that you sent me. However first I had to unistall the .0090 version, I couldnt use programs uninstall, so I had to go into registry edits and delete anything that was cisco. Then I manually deleted everything out of program files. After rebooting I installed the version you sent me an perfecto. Thanks so much for your help. This helps me out tremendously. Thanks again, hopefully this will help someone else out.
