Net Neutrality Comment Period Ends
by admin on Jun.15, 2007, under Uncategorized
Today is the last day for citizens and corporations to file comments on Net Neutrality with government regulators. The topic of Net Neutrality is basically if a law should be passed that would force equal ISP service to all instead of allowing ISPs to potentially play favorites. They may choose to offer faster or better service to those companies that benefit the ISP and less service to those who don’t.
Anti-Hacker / Anti Spyware Bill Passed
by admin on Jun.07, 2007, under Uncategorized
The US house passed another cyber-security bill to cover a range of cyber crimes and allow for civil penalties up to $3 million. The bill is called the Securely Protect Yourself Against Cyber Trespass Act.
Makes it unlawful to:
“…engage in unfair or deceptive acts or practices in connection with specified conduct, including: (1) taking unsolicited control of the computer; (2) modifying computer settings; (3) collecting personally identifiable information [incl. using keystroke loggers]; (4) inducing the owner or authorized user to disclose personally identifiable information; (5) inducing the unsolicited installation of computer software; and (6) removing or disabling a security, anti-spyware, or anti-virus technology.”
Also requires an opt-in that would outlaw information collection and transmission programs unless permission has been granted.
Smokers not only give me cancer but ruin my Internet too
by admin on May.04, 2007, under Uncategorized
We all know that if you hang around in smoky bars and restaurants for extended periods of time you can have damaging affects to your lungs. Little did we know that smoking can take down the Internet too. Ok well it is more like Internet2 but whatever.
“A homeless man threw a cigarette onto a mattress under Boston’s Longfellow Bridge, starting a blaze that eventually melted the fiber-optic link between Boston and New York.”
This took down all of the Internet2 blazing fast glory.
Why you get what you pay for
by admin on Jun.16, 2006, under Networking, Uncategorized
This is my first blog on my new blog site and I am going to start off with a rant, gotta love it. When you are in the IT world you get what you pay for. If you think that you can skimp on equipment and software and it will be good enough you are wrong. You may be able to send a few thousand $$$ less up front but you will pay for it in the long wrong through down time and man hours. I am a Cisco guy, I prefer in most situations to use Cisco routers/switches/firewalls/etc… because they are quality and work well together. I just started working on a network that has Cisco switches, Dell Switches and Intel switches and the network doesn’t run smooth. The different vendors of switches don’t play well together and in fact the dell switches of different models don’t even play well together. Take my advice and buy Cisco network gear.
