Cooling your datacenter

I have started researching cooling today datacenters today. I figured since this weekend is the hottest weekend since 1988 here and we have been having cooling issues in our datacenter it would be a good topic to look into. I have been downloading and reading white papers written by APC. Here is a link to the first one, I will be adding more to a page on my website later this week. I will blog about this cooling page when it is up and running. I don’t feel like I can blog in detail about this topic since it is so technical so I am just planning on putting up resources for you to do your own research. The people who should be looking into these cooling resources are people who are looking are moving from your standard 2U-5U servers to blade centers. A lot of companies look at the blade center as the perfect easy answer to space requirements of growing datacenter. The main point I want to get across is you NEED to take power and cooling into serious consideration before moving to blade centers. Another point that people new to this game is you can’t just through bulk AC at these datacenters anymore. With the way the blade centers change your heat output you need to design your entire datacenter around the cooling/power requirements of your blade centers. The money savings on high density blade centers for space requirements etc… can be fast overcome by the $$$ needed to cool your datacenter.

The last non technical entry to this post is that as the temp here reaches 100 degrees F and 110 degrees F heat index realize that I have no A/C to enjoy in my home, almost makes me wish I was in a nicely cooled datacenter (Almost…)
